WICHITA, Kan. – Freshman
Roxy Denton of the Omaha track & field team finished in eighth place in the heptathlon at the KT Woodman Multis at Wichita State.
Denton posted a score of 4,055, a lifetime best, leading a group of four Mavericks at the meet.
Kylie Johnson was 10th at 3,834,
Taylor Ramaekers took 12th with 3,828 points, and
Jaycee Schettler was 13th with 3,761. Schettler was a little more than 100 points from equaling her lifetime best while Johnson and Ramaekers, like classmate Denton, both posted lifetime bests.
"It was an important meet to come out and compete in," said head coach
Chris Richardson. "The freshman needed to do their first heptathlon, and Jaycee is coming back from an injury so we were really testing the waters.
"The heptathlon is different beast so I was happy with what I saw and since I know there's a lot of room for growth."
To begin competition in day two, the athletes took part in the long jump. Ramaekers was UNO's top finisher, coming in third in the event with a mark of 16-08, a personal best for all conditions. Johnson was 10th with a leap of 15-06 ¼, Denton 11th with a wind-aided jump of 15-04 ¾ and Schettler 19th at 13-06.
Schettler was the top finisher in the javelin with a lifetime best of 106-03. Ramaekers was eighth at 89-06, Denton took 10th at 88-05 and Johnson came in 16th at 67-08.
Schettler was Omaha's top finisher in the final event, the 800 meters, running a time of 2:37.09 to come in eighth. Her time was a lifetime best. Johnson was right behind in ninth at 2:38.99. Denton finished 11th at 2:40.53, and Ramaekers was 17th at 2:47.99.
The full team is back in action next Friday, April 23, at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College.
