OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team returned home Saturday to open February's slate of matches. The Mavericks dropped a close match to the visiting Missouri State Bears, 4-3.
Omaha got off to a good start Saturday afternoon with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 slot to earn the doubles point.
Madison Gallegos and
Ines Absisan took down Alye Darter and Hana Sisirak in No. 1 doubles, 6-4.
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich won at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, securing the tiebreaker, 7-5.
In the singles matches, Missouri State jumped out to an early lead taking the No. 5 and No. 2 spots. Gallegos earned Omaha a point in at No. 1 winning 6-4 and 6-3.
The Bears would get two more points with wins at No. 4 and No. 6. Lorentz outlasted Shaw at No. 3. Lorentz took the first set, 6-1, while Shaw would get the second, 7-5. Lorentz tallied the singles point after Shaw retired due to injury in the third set. Lorentz's singles point helped narrow Missouri State's win, 4-3.
The Mavericks return to action Feb. 20 with a 3 p.m. match at Northern Iowa.
