Drake Sweeps Diving Events, Omaha Falls to South Dakota State

OMAHA, Neb. – The Mavericks hosted the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Saturday afternoon for a Summit League meet at H&K Pool. Omaha swept the diving events and placed first in three swim events in the 184-116 loss to SDSU.
 
The Mavericks fall to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
 
"We are a young team still learning a lot about what it takes to compete at this level," said head coach Todd Samland. "I think we are moving in the right direction. Our program has to keep working towards the goal of performing well at the conference championships in April."
 
Darby Drake finished first in both the three and one-meter diving events. Drake posted a 235.72 score in the three-meter dive to bring in nine points for Omaha. In the one-meter dive, Drake scored 248.28. Both scores were at least six points higher than the second place finisher.
 
In the swim events, the Mavericks posted three first place, three second place, and six third place finishes.
 
Caroline Gardner picked up the first win for Omaha in the 100-yard breaststroke. She a little more than a second faster than Samantha Frigard from SDSU with a time of 1:06.30.  Bethany Gatlin collected the final two first place events for the Mavericks. With a time of 58.97, she won the 100-yard butterfly. Two events later, Gatlin won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:15.54.
 
Gatlin also picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.50. Maddie Mather placed second in the second event. She posted a time of 18:32.26 in the 1,650-yard freestyle to bring in four points for Omaha. Annie Leinart was the final second place finished with a time of 2:26.46 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
 
Morgan Baker finished third for the Mavericks in two back-to-back events. She swam times of 25.21 and 55.19 in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, respectively.
 
Parker Hagemann, Megan Latta, and Carina Monroe place third in their respected events. Hagemann swam a time of 2:00.07 in the 200-yard freestyle, Latta posted a time of 1:02.82 in the 100-yard backstroke, and Monroe swam 5:31.03 in the 500-yard freestyle for the Mavericks.
 
Omaha will be back in action March 5. The Mavericks will host South Dakota for their senior day at H&K Pool.
