AMES, Iowa – Omaha women's swimming & diving returned to action Friday night with a dual meet at Iowa State. The Mavericks earned one first-place, seven second-place, and seven third place finishes in the 180-79 loss.
"Today was a great chance to see our swimmers compete in some events they haven't had a chance to swim in so far this year," said head coach
Todd Samland. "It was nice to see many of our swimmers getting up and racing strong. We were able to see a few things that are starting to pay off from our hard work at practice."
Hailey Matthews posted the lone first-place finish in the 200-backstroke. She swam a time of 2:05.97 to lead the event. Matthews also swam a second-place time of 2L06.01 in the 200-fly and a 4:35.08 400-IM.
Payton Easley,
Annie Leinart,
Olivia Theil, and
Olivia Wassink all placed second for Omaha. Easley swam a 24.71 50-free, while Leinart finished second in the 200-breast with a time of 2:27.22.
Theil placed in the 500-free with a time of 5:29.18, while Wassink earned the final individual second-place finished in the 100-fly. She posted a time of 59.67.
A 400-free relay team of Wassink, Theil, Leinart, and
Rylee Trojan placed second with a time of 3:39.94 in the closing event. Theil led the way with a time of 54.39 in the second leg of the race.
The 400-medley team of Easley,
Gracie Streblow,
Parker Hagemann, and
Morgan Baker came in right behind the second-place finishers with a time of 3:48.00. Easley's first leg of the race led the team with a time of 56.19.
Omaha earned third-place finishes in the 200-medley relay and five individual events. Streblow,
Caroline Gardner,
Annika Harthoorn, and Matthews posted a time of 1:47.24. Matthew closed the race with the quickest time of the event at 24.43.
Heidi Lenarz placed third in two events. Her time of 11:05.22 in the 1,000-free earned a top-three placement. She also swam a time of 4:49.45 in the 400-IM to finish third.
Gardner, Hagemann, and
Bethany Gatlin added three more third-place finishes. Gardner posted a time of 1:06.41 in the 100-breast event, while Hagemann swam a 5:31.35 500-free. Gatlin competed in the 100-fly with a time of 1:00.52.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 13. The Mavericks open league action hosting South Dakota State at 2 p.m.
"We have a big challenge in front of us with SDSU coming to Omaha next weekend. We hope to be competitive with them."
