OMAHA, Neb. – Both the men's and women's swimming & diving teams took down South Dakota State Saturday afternoon in their first conference dual meet of the season. The Maverick men took a 148-133 win, while the women cruised to a 170-105 win.
It marked the first win against a Division I opponent in program history on the men's side.
"What a great night tonight! Our team dove and swam great against South Dakota State," said head coach
Todd Samland. "Our staff also put together a great lineup for today's meet that was then executed to its fullest potential by our athletes. I was so happy to see our team perform well against a quality program. In battles like this, it is quality and depth that get you the win, and we showed up across the board today."
Between the two teams, Omaha raked in 20 first-place finishes, 16 second-place finishes, and 12 third-place finishes.
For the men,
Luke Asbury,
Brandon Cheong,
Elijah Clements, and
Logan Kempf swam a time of 1:35.22 in the 200-medley relay to place first. Kempf swam the fourth leg and the fastest time for the Mavericks at 21:58.
Kody Hollingsworth followed up the medley win with a win in the 100-back for Omaha. He swam a time of 49.37. Hollingsworth also placed first in the 100-free with a time of 46.30.
Cheong and Asbury recorded the next two first place times. Cheong swam a time of 58.74 in the 100-breast, while Asbury recorded a time of 1:57.70 in the 200-fly.
Daniel Young earned three first-place swims. His first came in the 50-free with a time of 21.51. He then swam 2:06.26 in the 200-Back. He capped the meet with a 1:56.56 time in the 200-IM.
Isaac Fletcher added a first-place finish in the 200-back swimming a time of 1:55.96, while Clements tallied his second with a 50.05 performance in the 100-fly.
The Maverick women opened the meet with a 200-medley relay first place win.
Gracie Streblow,
Caroline Gardner,
Annika Harthoorn, and
Payton Easley combined for a time of 1:45.27. Easley's time of 23.91 in the final leg led Omaha to the win.
Haarthorn added two more first place tallies for Omaha. She swam a time of 57.58 in the 100-back and a time of 57.71 in the 100-fly.
Hailey Matthews and Gardner were the only other Omaha women to record multiple first-place times. In the 200-free, she swam a time of 1:54.54, while later posting a time of 2:05.06 in the 200-back. Gardner earned her second in the 100-breast with a time of 1:06.39.
Carina Monroe led the Mavericks in the distance with a first-place finish in the 1,000 free. She posted a time of 10:51.97.
Sadie Khalil,
Annie Leinart,
Rylee Trojan, and
Reece Cooper rounded out the first-place finishes on the women's side. Khalil posted a time of 2:18.05 in the 200-fly, while Leinart swam a time of 2:25.92 in the 200-breast. Trojan swam the 500-free in 5:15.46. In the 1M-dive, Cooper posted a score of 239.33.
"We have a few more weeks of hard work to do in the pool, and then it'll be a trip to Rochester, Minnesota for another exciting meet for these two teams."
The Mavericks return to action Dec. 3-5 at the Rochester Invite in Rochester, Minnesota.
