MACOMB, Ill. - The Omaha men's soccer team battled through regulation, but the Mavericks fell short to the No. 2 Oral Roberts squad in the Summit League semifinal. The Golden Eagles earned a 2-1 win and advance to play No. 1 Denver in the championship on Monday.
The Mavericks finish the season 6-10-1.
How It Happened
- After scoring a goal earlier this season vs. Oral Roberts, Hugo Kametani looked for early opportunities to score on the Golden Eagles again. He took the first shot on goal at the 7:56 mark aimed at the bottom right of the net. Miles Motakef dove for the save. Two minutes later, Kametani fired another shot, but this one went wide right to miss the target.
- ORU's Reed Berry challenged Omaha's Nathanael Sallah in the 12th minute of action, but Sallah tallied his first save.
- Sallah added two more stops to his stat line in the 16th minute on back-to-back attempts seconds apart from ORU. Dante Brigida put a strike on target that Sallah saved, but Andrew Nunez was there to control the deflected ball. Nunez's shot was also swatted by Sallah and then cleared by Kametani.
- The next shot on goal found the back of the net. Juan Arias took an ORU free kick from just outside the box. He sent the ball high left to connect and take a 1-0. Inaki Aldao tried to tie the match in the 41st minute, but the lead stayed in ORU's favor at the break.
- Mitch Hammer and Brigida put the goalkeepers to work right out of halftime. Both shots were saved.
- In the 54th minute, Kenji Mboma Dem managed a shot that was blocked. He tracked down the deflection and used one more touch to net the equalizer. Hammer tallied an assist on the play.
- Tevin Rochester's attempt for the lead in the 73rd minute was saved by Motakef, but less than a minute later Arias's attempt reclaimed the lead for ORU, 2-1.
- Omaha's next look on target came in the 88th minute on a penalty kick after Motakef fouled inside the box. Nil Ayats took the shot for the Mavericks, but a diving save to the left of the net by Motakef ruined the chance at tying the match once more. The Golden Eagles won, 2-1.
