Mavericks Battle it Out Against South Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks fall short in a five-set thriller against South Dakota. With a point for point battle, the Mavericks force the game to go into a close five sets.

The Mavericks are now 9-8 overall and 6-1 in the Summit League.
 
 
How It Happened
  • South Dakota opened the first set with three unanswered points. A kill by Sadie Limback got Omaha on the board. An ace from Claire Mountjoy and another kill from Limback brought the game to a tie at 3. South Dakota went on a run to clinch the lead 7-4. The teams went back and forth until the Coyotes had a 18-16 lead and ran from there. The Mavericks tallied one more point with a kill by Limback. South Dakota recorded the last three points to win set one.
  • To start the second set the teams went point for point again. It wasn't until back-to-back kills by Shayla McCormick and Rylee Marshall that the Mavericks took the definite lead, 16-13. The back and forth continued until a service error by South Dakota put the Mavericks up 22-19. Omaha finished the set strong with a score of 25-23.
  • A kill by Mariah Buss gave Omaha the first point of set three but then the Mavericks fell behind 8-3. A kill from Marshall and another from Buss put the Mavericks back within three points. Omaha continued its run with an ace from Clarkson, a kill from Limback and a couple errors from the Coyotes, to tie the game 11-11. The set again went point for point as the Mavericks pushed to a 27-25 win off of a kill from Rachel Fairbanks and an error from South Dakota.
  • The Mavericks opened the forth set exchanging points with the Coyotes off of errors on both sides. Finally a kill from Buss brought the game to a 6-5 score with the Mavericks trailing by one. Omaha snagged a lead at 13-12 after a kill from Limback. After going back and forth, South Dakota went on a three point stretch, making it 24-21, but was stopped by a kill from Shayla McCormick. South Dakota got the following point and clinched set four 25-22.
  • Omaha started off set five with an early lead of 5-2 after kills from Buss and McCormick. South Dakota answered on that run and took the lead, 9-6. Back-to-back kills for the Mavericks from Sami Clarkson and McKenna Ruch, Omaha only trailed by one. A tight game battling all the way to the end, the Mavericks fell short in set five 15-13. South Dakota took set five and the match.

Inside the Box
  • Buss notched 16 kills and added four digs.
  • Marshall tallied seven kills with a .316 hitting percentage. She recorded five total blocks.  
  • Clarkson led the offense with 44 assists, and she added 10 digs and three blocks.
  • Jaiden Centeno recorded 31 digs, while Claire Mountjoy added 22.
  • Limback recorded another double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. She also tallied three blocks.
