OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha athletic department has earned three NCAA Public Recognition Awards, which include two women's teams and one men's team.
The Omaha hockey team along with the women's basketball and women's tennis programs were honored for multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR) ranking in the top 10 percent in each sport. This season's awards are based on four-year figures through 2018-19.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
The hockey team has been a leader in academic recognition by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference since the conference's inception in 2013. The Mavericks regularly lead the NCHC in players on the Academic All-Conference list. This season, the Mavericks were one of 11 collegiate hockey programs nationally and the only NCHC member to earn the honor. It is also the second-straight year that the hockey program has been honored for ranking in the top 10 percent for APR.
Women's basketball also garnered the honor this year while women's tennis earned its seventh straight NCAA Public Recognition Award.
A total of 1,380 NCAA Division I teams earned Public Recognition Awards this year for high achievement, including 881 women's teams and 499 men's or mixed squads. This year's total number of teams recognized increased by 52 from a year ago. Scores for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, with 1,266 teams earning a perfect score.
