DES MOINES, Iowa – The women's tennis program concluded its opening tournament of the fall season at the Drake Invite.
"This was a good weekend to start the year," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "There was some really good competition amongst teams we will see later in the spring. It was a long three days with a lot of matches and I'm happy how the ladies were trying to execute what we've been doing in practice."
In doubles action, a collective effort helped earn third place in Flight A as the team of
Emily Behling and
Savanna Crowell picked up a pair of wins, followed by
Natalie Lorentz and Crowell earning a win in the consolation championship.
Singles Flight B saw Lorentz advance to the consolation title game in the winner's bracket, but she ultimately fell in straight sets to WSU's Natsumi Kurahashi. Over the flight, she went 2-1.
Flight C singles saw
Clare Crockett advance to the consolation title match after she won over Drake's Megan Webb. Freshman
Lillian Tiemeyer earned her first-career win as a Maverick after she defeated Drake's Kendall Hunt, 6-1, 6-3.
Over the flight, Tiemeyer went on to advance to the title match in the winner's bracket after she defeated Upper Iowa's Diemante Krivickaite 6-3, 6-2. She finished runner-up with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Creighton's Laura Higueras.
"We've put an emphasis on some things and there will be some road bumps, but most of the players were using this weekend to just get better," said Summitt. "I am looking forward to two more solid weeks of practice before our next tournament"
The Mavericks return to fall action Sept. 27-29, as the team will compete at the Creighton Invite in Omaha. For more information, visit OMavs.com.
