OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team topped South Dakota 5-2 in Summit League tennis action on Wednesday at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The Mavericks conclude the regular season with a 6-17 overall record (2-3 Summit League), while the Coyotes fell to 7-10 (2-2 Summit League).
"I am proud of the team's effort today against South Dakota," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "We dug in and did not quit. Our backs were against the wall, in terms of our season ending or qualifying for the conference tournament."
Omaha claimed the doubles point with
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich winning 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
Ines Absisan and
Emily Behling clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 3.
The Mavericks took control of the match by winning four of the six singles matches.
Janelle Wilson recorded the first singles point for the Mavericks at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-4. Kapelevich topped Anastasia Bondarenko 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5. Absisan clinched the match for Omaha with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1. Lorentz wrapped things up with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win at the No. 3 spot.
"I am proud our team did not want our season to end today," said Summit. "We are a good team and need to have this type of confidence every match. We are looking forward to the tournament next weekend."
Omaha returns to the courts April 26-27 in Tulsa, Okla., at the Summit League Championships.
