Men’s Tennis Tops Air Force, Midland on Sunday

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team won two matches on Sunday at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.  The Mavericks opened the day with a 4-3 win over Air Force before topping Midland 6-1 to end the day.

The Mavericks have won five-straight matches and improved to 7-8 overall on the season.

Omaha 4, Air Force 3
Omaha won two matches to clinch the doubles point.  Davis Lawley and Nathan Reekie topped Patrick Sklenka and Tadhg Collins 6-2 at No. 1.  Abdoul Ouattara and Matt Dunn defeated Isaac Perez and Jamie Bautista 6-2 at No. 2.  Hugo Piles Ballester and Ethan Henry held a 5-4 lead at No. 3, but the match went unfinished after the Mavericks clinched the point.

"The guys stepped up big again today, said head coach Tyson Thomas.  "We came out strong in doubles, but they came back and fought well in singles."

Omaha and Air Force split the six singles matches 3-3.  Dunn was the first Maverick off the court with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win over Robert Baylon at No. 5.  Piles Ballester followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Collins at No. 4.

The Falcons won two straight matches to make things interesting.  Mack Galvin defeated Henry 7-6 (0), 6-4 at No. 6.  On the first court, Sklenka defeated Ouattara 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The Mavericks secured the win as Reekie defeated Sanderson in split sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Air Force's Paul Hendrix won the final match on the court over Davis Lawley in split sets 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Omaha 6, Midland 1
The Mavericks won all three doubles matches to claim the opening point.  Ouattara and Dunn stopped Enrique Del Rio and Conrad Mascarenhas 6-1 at No. 1.  Piles Ballester and Henry won a 6-1 decision over Jack Fryer and Dylan Hatanelas at No. 2.  To complete the sweep, Jacob Weber and Alex Woodward defeated Salvador Almeida and Jamie Olarieta 6-4 at No. 3.

Omaha won five of the six singles matches to pick up the victory.  Ouattara made quick work of Mascarenhas at No. 1 6-1, 6-0.  Piles Ballester stopped Almeida 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2.  Dunn and Henry each picked up 6-2, 6-3 wins at No. 3 and 4, respectively.  Jacob Weber picked up his first collegiate win in split sets at No. 6 over Hatanelas 1-6, 6-2, 10-5.

"We keep getting different guys to step up and win big matches or clinch the dual," said Thomas.  "It's big for this team because we know anyone can make the difference in the match. Reekie was huge for us today winning a three-setter that clinched us the match."
