DES MOINES, IOWA – The Omaha women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Drake Sunday morning in Des Moines.
The Mavericks saw a close doubles point go Drake's direction in the start of the match. After the Bulldogs picked up a 6-3 victory at No. 3 over
Emily Behling and
Marie Kapelevich, the Mavericks bounced back and took a win at No. 2 from
Ines Absisan and
Janelle Wilson, 6-1.
The deciding point came at No. 1, as
Savanna Crowell and
Natalie Lorentz fell 6-3.
In singles,
Savanna Crowell won at No. 5 after Drake retired through two sets (1-6, 6-6, 1-0). The Mavericks saw a close contest at No. 1 after
Ines Absisan fell in a close, three-set match 6-7, 6-4, 10-8.
Wilson dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 2, Kapelevich fell 7-6, 5-2 at No. 3 and Lorentz dropped a 6-3, 6-0 result at No. 4. On No. 6, Behilng was defeated 7-6, 6-2.
"The score doesn't reflect how we played today," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "We had some great matches up and down the lineup. We just got off to some slow starts. When that happens, we have a difficult time getting back into it. This is all good experience for every player here and we need to use that to get better."
The Mavericks return home for a pair of matches this Saturday, March 2, against Chicago State and Marquette. The start times are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
