OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha cross country team will compete for the Summit League Championship presented by U.S. Air Force Special Warfare on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Fargo, N.D.
The 6k women's race will begin at noon at the Rose Creek Golf Course.
The Mavericks, who were picked to finish fifth in the annual Summit League preseason coaches' poll, have run four races to prepare for the championship meet. They're coming off a strong performance at the Bradley Pink Classic on Oct. 18.
In that meet, junior
Emily Johnson broke UNO's 6k school record for cross country with a time of 21:12.9 to finish fourth in the field of 180 runners. She broke the old mark, set by Anja Puc at the Summit League Championship in November of 2010, by almost 26 seconds.
Another strong performance by Johnson this week could cement her standing as one of Omaha's finest runners with still another year and a half to compete.
Johnson wasn't the only Maverick who ran well at Bradley.
Heidi Hall ran second for the Mavericks and 67th overall with a time of 22:39.1, a new career best and a time that ranks 12th all-time at UNO.
Anita Jenkins also set a lifetime best with a time of 23:03.9, finishing third for the Mavericks and 90th overall. Her time ranks 15th best.
Joanna Topham ran fourth and 98th overall with a time of 23:11.7, a personal best and UNO's 17th best clocking all-time.
Ivanna Uribe finished the scoring with a time of 23:24.1, another PR and good for 108th.
Following the Summit championship, the Mavericks will have almost two weeks off before running in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 in Stillwater, Okla.
