HARTLAND, Wis. – The Omaha women's tennis team closed out the weekend with a 5-2 defeat against Milwaukee on the road.
"It was a tough day for us overall," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "We ended up dropping doubles due to getting some slow starts on a few courts. After the third or fourth game in doubles were started getting rhythm and were even with them. Not getting that point gave Milwaukee a bit of momentum. We competed in parts of matches, but now we just need to piece it together."
The Mavericks fell at No. 1 doubles, as Milwaukee's Alex Belle and Mayya Perova defeated
Natalie Lorentz and
Savanna Crowell, 6-2. Omaha bounced back at No. 2 when
Ines Absisan and
Janelle Wilson earned a 6-2 win over Nicole Clark and Nikki Milner and evened it up. The Panthers, however, won the doubles point as Anna Daniel Fuentes and Lucy Harper defeated
Rylee Tucker and
Emily Behling, 6-4.
In singles play, the Mavericks picked up two points at No. 2 and No. 6. Wilson defeated Perova at No. 2 (6-3, 6-4), while Behling defeated the Panthers' Loren Nelson, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 1, Absisan dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to
Belle, and
Marie Kapelevich was edged by Milwaukee's Nicole Clark 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3. On court No. 4,
Natalie Lorentz was forced to retire due to injury, as Nikki Miner won the match, 3-1. At No. 5, Crowell dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match to UWM's Daniel Fuentes.
The Mavericks return to action for a two-day competition weekend at Bradley (Feb. 2) and at Eastern Illinois (Feb. 3). The competition is set to take place in Peoria, Ill.
