LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Maverick track and field team concluded its weekend at the Jayhawk Classic at the University of Kansas Saturday afternoon.
In the meet,
Emily Johnson, who came off a previous personal best and slid into fifth all-time for the 3000 meter run last weekend, improved her spot by winning the event. The sophomore set a new personal best of of 10:09.34 to win the event, besting her previous mark of 10:13.27.
In the field events, both
Anna Edet and
Stephanie Ahrens tallied runner-up finishes in the weight throw and high jump. Edet threw a distance of 56'10" (17.32m), while Ahrens jumped 5'8.50" (1.74m).
Lastly,
Jaycee Schettler recorded a new personal best score of 441 points in the women's pentathlon and finished fifth. She tallied personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (10.37), the high jump (4'8.25" (1.43m)) and the 800-meter run (2:38.4). She also won the shot put for the pentathlon with a distance of 37'8" (11.48m).
"Today was fun. We had some good performances and everyone was supporting each other," said head coach
Chris Richardson. "Sometimes when one person does well, that serves as motivation for others. We still have some things to work on in certain events, but we're headed in the right direction."
The Mavericks return to Lincoln for the second time this indoor season at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, which takes place Friday, Feb. 1-2. Several student-athletes will also compete at the Dakota Realty Alumni Meet, which takes place in Vermillion, S.D. on Feb. 2.
