MADISON, Wis. – The Omaha women's tennis team fell 7-0 at Wisconsin Friday afternoon on the road.
The Mavericks fought hard all across the board, but the Badgers were able to take the doubles point and sweep singles play.
"The overall score does not show how close and competitive this meet was," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "I felt we were toe-to-toe with them. The difference is that Wisconsin played better on key points. They're a good team that will do very well in the Big 10 and credit to them, but I felt that we are right there with them. We are looking forward to turning this around tomorrow."
In doubles play, Wisconsin's Melissa Pick and MaryAnn Rompf defeated
Emily Behling and
Rylee Tucker, 6-0, at No. 3. Despite taking two sets on No. 1, the duo of
Natalie Lorentz and
Savanna Crowell fell 6-2 to the Badgers' Sarah Castellano and Anna Makarova.
Ines Absisan and
Janelle Wilson were ahead 5-2 in No. 2 doubles, but the match was left unfinished.
In singles, Absisan fell to Castellano, 6-2, 6-1, while Wilson dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Lexi Keberle.
Marie Kapelevich lost 6-3, 6-2 to Anna Makarova, and Lorentz fell in a three-set tiebreaker (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6)) to Wisconsin's Pick. At No. 5, Crowell fell 6-4, 6-3 to Ava Markham, and
Emily Behling dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to Rompf.
The Mavericks have a quick turnaround, as they stay in the state of Wisconsin and make the trip to Milwaukee to take on the Panthers Saturday, Jan. 26. The first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. For more information, visit OMavs.com.
