VERMILLION, S.D. – The Omaha swimming and diving program fell 181-117 at South Dakota Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks drop to 2-5 overall in dual meets and 1-1 in league action.
"This was a rough meet for us and USD came in with some very strong performances and depth," said head coach
Todd Samland. "We fought back well and found some points that we need to work on as we begin to prepare for the conference championships."
Individually,
Kylie Vermeire won the 800 freestyle with a time of 9:25.92 and beat her competition by nearly 12 seconds. Vermeire also tallied her second win of the day in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:34.65.
Abbey Mitchell swam a second-place effort in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:45.60, followed by teammate
Rebecca Martini in third (2:48.36).
Bethany Gatlin had a top finish in the 100-meter butterfly after she swam a 1:06.15.
Grete Baker was the third and final Maverick to win an event, as she topped the competition in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:27.45, followed by teammates Martini in third (2:31.95) and
Sydney Haynes in fourth (2:41.20). Baker also finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:27.26).
For the 200 free,
Lizzy Giese and
Anna Capoun posted second- and third-place finishes with times of 2:12.97 and 2:13.63, respectively. Capoun also recorded third- and fourth-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (1:01.31) and the 50-meter freestyle (28.19).
In two different events,
Kirsten Kracke had runner-up finishes. She recorded a 27.70 in the 50-meter free, and also swam a 1:00.65 in the 100-freestyle.
Vermeire followed up later with another top-five effort in the 100-backstroke with a third-place finish at 1:08.21, while Kracke finished fourth with a 1:08.36.
For the 3-meter dive,
Madeline Taylor and
Annika Clinton finished third and fourth with scores of 245.20 and 225.35, respectively. Clinton also had a runner-up result in the 1-meter with a 243.15.
Lastly, the team of Kracke, Vermeire, Abraham and Capoun finished in second with a 1:51.51 in the 200-meter freestyle, just behind South Dakota's 1:50.59.
The Mavericks return to league action Friday, Jan. 25. The next meet marks Senior Night against South Dakota State, with the time set for 6 p.m. at H&K Pool.
