Second Half Propels Omaha Past Vaughan SC

VAUGHAN, Ontario, Canada – The Omaha men's soccer team concluded its four-match tour of Canada on Monday, as the Mavericks defeated Vaughan SC 3-1.  With the win, Omaha finished its trip with a 4-0 record against Canadian competition.

The Mavericks took the early advantage with a goal in the 10th minute.  Freshman Nil Ayats chipped a ball to junior Diego Gutierrez on the wing.  Gutierrez penetrated the defense off the dribble before playing the ball back to Ayats who drilled home a shot from the top of the penalty area.

Vaughan drew level right before the half on a penalty kick.

Gutierrez gave the Mavericks a one-goal advantage with his first goal of the trip five minutes into the second half.  Junior Fred Frimpong sent a ball to Ayats near the penalty area.  Ayats then played a square pass to Gutierrez who then blasted a left-footed shot into the upper left corner for a 2-1 lead.

Junior Elvir Ibisevic sealed the victory with his fourth goal of the week.  Sophomore Oliver Bihuniak directed a pass towards the 18-yard box where Ibisevic beat a pair of defenders before slipping the ball past the recovering defense for the 3-1 advantage.

Omaha's trip will be covered with a blog on OMavs.com, as well as social media via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.  The hashtag #MavericksInCanada will be used throughout the trip to encompass both Omaha's official posts and players' experiences on social media.
