LONGUEUIL, Quebec, Canada – The Omaha men's soccer team improved to 3-0 on its foreign tour in Canada with a 1-0 win over SC Longueuil on Thursday evening.
Omaha was on the attack from the opening whistle. In the third minute, senior Billy Hoffman's header hit the crossbar. Five minutes later, junior
Seth Rinderknecht's header nearly found its way into the back of the net.
The Mavericks finally broke through in the 29th minute. Sophomore
Diego Gutierrez played a free kick into the penalty area that found junior
Elvir Ibisevic. Ibisevic placed his header into the top left corner to put Omaha in front 1-0.
Longueuil had a pair of chances to draw level in the 33rd minute. The first shot hit the post and sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Smith saved the follow-up shot to preserve the 1-0 Maverick lead.
Late in the second half, Smith pushed a Longueuil shot over the crossbar to secure Omaha's 1-0 win.
"Tonight was certainly our best match passing the ball," said head coach
Bob Warming. "At times we had excellent movement and with a little more juice in our legs, we likely would have scored four. The guys felt confident, and their confidence is justified. Matt (Smith) came up with terrific saves in all three matches. We still have a lot to work on, but scoring five goals and keeping three clean sheets is a good way to leave Montreal."
Omaha continues its tour of Canada with another day in Montreal before heading to Toronto. The Mavericks return to action on Monday, July 2 against a local opponent.
Omaha's trip will be covered with a blog on OMavs.com, as well as social media via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. The hashtag #MavericksInCanada will be used throughout the trip to encompass both Omaha's official posts and players' experiences on social media.
