SAINT-HUBERT, Quebec, Canada – Two second half goals propelled the Omaha men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Saint-Hubert on Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Mavericks improved to 2-0 on their Canadian tour.
Saint-Hubert looked to have the early advantage, but sophomore goalkeeper
Matt Smith made a pair of saves to keep the match scoreless.
Omaha took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the second half. Junior defender
Seth Rinderknecht played a long ball that found junior
Elvir Ibisevic behind the Saint-Hubert defense. Ibisevic took a touch past the onrushing defender and buried a shot into the bottom left corner.
Just eight minutes later, a corner kick led to the Mavericks second goal. Rinderknecht out jumped a pair of Saint-Hubert defenders and headed in freshman Nil Ayats' corner for a 2-0 Omaha lead.
"Tonight's match was much more like a college game," said head coach
Bob Warming. "It was an aggressive, high energy first half. Sometimes you can outplay your opponent for a win, and there are times you need to dig in and grind out a win. That is what successful teams do. They win the type game they are in."
Omaha continues its tour of Canada on Thursday, June 28, visiting CS Longueuil at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Omaha's trip will be covered with a blog on OMavs.com, as well as social media via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. The hashtag #MavericksInCanada will be used throughout the trip to encompass both Omaha's official posts and players' experiences on social media.
