LONGUEUIL, Quebec, Canada – The Omaha men's soccer team opened with a 2-0 win over CS Longueuil to open play in its Canadian tour on Tuesday evening.
Junior
Fred Frimpong opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute. Sophomore
Diego Gutierrez assisted on the goal.
In the 13th minute, CS Longueuil earned a penalty kick following an Omaha foul in the box. Sophomore
Matt Smith, making his first collegiate start, blocked the shot to keep in front 1-0.
The Mavericks added to their lead with a goal in the 26th minute. Junior
Elvir Ibisevic blasted a shot past the Longueuil keeper to make it 2-0. Senior
Denzel Woods and sophomore
Stevie Siy were credited with assists.
"I am thankful to everyone who helped make this trip possible for our program," said head coach
Bob Warming. "Tonight we played against some talented players, including a young pro with four caps with Belgium U21 team. The coaching staff is looking forward to watching our guys continued growth."
Omaha continues its tour of Canada on Wednesday, June 27, visiting Saint-Hubert at 6 p.m. CT.
