TULSA, Okla. – The Omaha men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Oral Roberts at ONEOK Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 5-10 overall and 0-2 in Summit League play. The Golden Eagles improved to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
Oral Roberts took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point.
Matt Dunn and
Luke Moorhead dropped a 6-4 decision to Eddy Leardini and Alvaro Santamaria.
Razvan Grigorescu and
Alex Woodward evened things up with a 6-2 win at No. 2. ORU claimed the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 1.
Grigorescu evened the match at 1-1 with a straight-set win over Kenneth Boykin at No. 1. Ouattara put the Mavericks ahead with a 6-4, 6-3 over Jan Pehnec.
The Golden Eagles won close matches at No. 3 and No. 4 to regain the lead.
Marko Minic evened the score, 3-3, with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Scott Hjelm at No. 6. ORU clinched the match when Leardini topped Woodward 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
"Oral Roberts played a great match this afternoon," said head coach
Tyson Thomas. "We've had close matches against them over the last few years and today didn't disappoint. Our guys fought hard, but at some crucial moments in doubles and singles ORU stepped up."
The Mavericks return to the court on Sunday, March 11 against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
