OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis team closed a busy weekend with two wins Saturday, defeating Bradley 5-2 and Doane 7-0 at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. With the wins, the Mavericks improve to 5-5 on the season.
MATCH ONE – OMAHA 5, BRADLEY 2
In the opener, Omaha claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The No. 1 doubles team of
Michelle Lo and
Janelle Wilson defeated Sandra Maletin and Natalia Barbery, 6-3. The No. 2 duo of
Savanna Crowell and
Natalie Lorentz narrowly escaped Malini Wijesinghe and Alexa Brandt, 7-6.
The Mavericks then picked up four singles victories to secure the win. Wilson, slotted at No. 2, defeated Wijesinghe, 6-4, 6-3. Then No. 4
Marie Kapelevich overpowered Victoria Gonzalez, 7-5, 6-2. Next, Lorentz breezed by Kinga Kovacs at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1. Lastly,
Rylee Tucker won by default after Barbery withdrew due to injury.
MATCH TWO – OMAHA 7, DOANE 0
Omaha then welcomed Doane for the second match of the day, sweeping all doubles and singles play to claim the match, 7-0. In doubles competition, the No. 1 pair of Crowell and Lorentz dispatched Brianna Kempel and Ellie Bender, 6-0. Kapelevich and
Clare Crockett teamed up at the No. 3 spot, dismantling Alnna Weir and Makayla Rice, 6-0.
In singles competition, the Mavericks were perfect, going 6-for-6 to cap the evening.
Emily Behling swept Haley Yohe, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Tucker defeated Carissa Moore, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and Crowell conquered Ashley Zaeske, 6-2, 6-0.
"This was a fantastic finish to the weekend after today's matches," head coach
Adam Summitt said. "I am extremely proud of the team and the way they played this weekend. Bradley is a very good team, and we knew today was going to be a challenge. Credit to our freshman duo of
Savanna Crowell and
Natalie Lorentz; they played like upperclassmen to clinch the doubles point for us. I am excited to keep this momentum rolling into practice and keep our focus on Iowa State."
Omaha returns to the courts on Sunday, Feb. 25, taking on Iowa State in a neutral-site match in Lincoln, Neb. at 3 p.m.
