OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis opened a three-match weekend Friday evening with a 5-2 victory over Northern Iowa at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. With the win, the Mavericks are 3-5 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 2-3.
Omaha opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The pair of
Michelle Lo and
Janelle Wilson dispatched the team of Gisela Kemper and Reghan Lynch at No. 1, 6-4. The No. 2 duo of
Savanna Crowell and
Natalie Lorentz defeated Harri Proudfoot and Valentina Caro, 6-2. Lastly, the tandem of
Marie Kapelevich and
Emily Behling outlasted Kate Merrick and Savanna Hunt at No. 3, 6-1.
The Mavericks continued their solid play by taking four of six singles matches to claim the victory. Lorentz stopped Proudfoot at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-3. Kapelevich topped Merrick at No. 4, 6-0 in the first set before her opponent retired.
Rylee Tucker claimed a win at No. 5 by outdueling Caro, 6-1, 7-5, and Behling needed split sets before topping Hunt, 6-0, 2-6, 7-6(2).
"This was a great match for us to start our weekend," head coach
Adam Summitt said. "We've talked the last two weeks about getting off to a good start in singles, and the ladies responded and did just that. This is a good confidence win as well. We lost 6-1 to Northern Iowa last year, and this shows the improvement we've made. I'm happy for our team and excited for tomorrow."
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17, welcoming Bradley at 2 p.m. and Doane at 7 p.m. at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The matches cap the Mavericks' six-match homestand.
