OMAHA, NEB. – The Omaha women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to crosstown rival Creighton on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 2-2, while the Bluejays improve to 1-2.
Omaha opened the match by winning the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of
Michelle Lo and
Janelle Wilson stopped Creighton's top team of Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette, 6-3. The Mavericks clinched the doubles point when
Natalie Lorentz and
Savanna Crowell defeated Michaela Henne and Laura Higueras at No. 2, 6-4.
However, Creighton took four of the singles matches to secure the victory. At No. 6, UNO's
Marie Kapelevich, triumphed over Higueras, 6-4, 6-4. Wilson outlasted Henne for a three-set win at No. 2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
"It's never easy, or fun, to experience a loss like this. I thought we had a lot of positives today in our match," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "In doubles, we came out strong and played some great matches. I felt we dipped again in singles. We needed to get a faster start in singles to carry the momentum from the doubles point. Every match was competitive and close. Just need to execute and finish."
Omaha returns to action on Friday, Feb. 2, welcoming Missouri State to the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
