ROCKFORD, Ill. – Nathan Reekie clinched the match for Omaha, as the Mavericks secured the 4-3 decision over the St. Louis Billikens Saturday afternoon in Rockford, Illinois. With the win, Omaha improves to 2-1 (0-0 Summit League), while Saint Louis drops to 0-2 (0-0 A-10).
The Mavericks started out hot by taking the doubles point. The No. 3 tandem of
Matt Dunn and
Luke Moorhead breezed by Oscar Pachon and Kenji Yanaba, 6-1. The No. 2 duo of Reekie and
Alex Woodward defeated the John and Justin Nogalski, 6-4.
Razvan Grigorescu and
Abdoul Ouattara were up 5-2 but did not finish the match after the clinch.
Omaha gained three crucial singles victories to capture the match win. At No. 2
Abdoul Ouattara held a 3-1 lead before SLU's David Ferragut withdrew from the contest. At No. 4 Dunn earned a hard-fought victory 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Pachon.
With the match tied at 3-3, Reekie battled back from being a set down to defeat John Nogalski 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
"I was very happy with the energy the guys brought to doubles. That set the tone for the day," Head Coach
Tyson Thomas said. "I'm proud of how we responded to adversity today. SLU stole the momentum towards the middle and it would have been easy to let it slip away, but the guys showed a mature resolve to stay focused and pull this one out."
Omaha returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 1, hosting crosstown rival Creighton. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
