Mavericks Split Doubleheader With UMKC, William Jewell

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Omaha women's tennis team split matches with UMKC and William Jewell in its first road matches of the year on Sunday. The Mavericks started the day with a 5-2 loss to UMKC before traveling to William Jewell, where they swept the Cardinals 9-0 for their second win of the season.
 
With the split, Omaha is now 2-1 (0-0 Summit League) on the season.
 
MATCH ONE – UMKC 5, Omaha 2
In the opener, UMKC claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.  The No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Lo and Natalie Lorentz defeated Melinda Johnson and Yana Grechkina, 6-3.
 
The Mavericks picked up two points in singles play thanks to wins by No. 2 Janelle Wilson and No. 4 Lorentz. Lorentz defeated Thanushree Vale, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.  Wilson then followed it up by defeating Melinda Johnson, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
 
"We started the day off with the WAC champion, UMKC," head coach Adam Summitt said.  "I knew we'd be in for a fight. I was very happy with the fight of our players, we just came up short in a few points."
 
MATCH TWO – Omaha 9, William Jewell 0
Omaha then visited William Jewell for the 9-0 victory.
 
The Mavericks were able to take all three doubles matches from the Cardinals to claim the first point.  The No. 2 team of Wilson and Rylee Tucker started it off with an 8-0 win against Hannah Waine and Julia Yamate. Then the No. 3 team of Marie Kapelevich and Clare Crockett breezed by Whitney Hollomen and Morgan Holopinek, 8-1. Lastly, the No. 1 team of Savanna Crowell with Lorentz defeated Claire Mackay and Becca Richison, 8-4. 
 
In singles play, No. 5 Kapelevich made quick work of Yamate, 6-0, 6-0.  Then No. 4 Tucker defeated Hollomen, 6-1, 6-0. Lo, slotted as the No. 1, also triumphed over Mackay, 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 Lorentz claimed another victory over Richison, 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 Emily Behling defeated Waine, 6-2, 6-3, and Crockett picked up a win against Holopinek, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 position.
 
"It was a long day as we played a doubleheader," Summitt said. "William Jewell was a good challenge, and I'm happy the players could control the points which led to the sweep."
 
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m., taking on crosstown foe Creighton at Hanscom Tennis Center.
