MADISON, Wisc. – The Omaha men's tennis team was upended 6-1 in its 2018 spring opener by Wisconsin on Saturday evening at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Mavericks are 0-1 on the season, while the Badgers improved to 2-0.

Sophomore Abdoul Ouattara picked up the lone victory for UNO, taking a split singles victory in his first spring match as a Maverick.  The Bouake, Ivory Coast native edged Josef Dodridge, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 2 matchup for Omaha's lone point in the match.

UW secured the doubles point with wins in the top two spots.  The No. 1 duo of Dodridge and Chema Carranza knocked off Omaha's Ouattara and Razvan Grigorescu, 6-2, before Osgar O'Hoisin and Daniel Soyfer collected a 6-3 victory over Nathan Reekie and Alex Woodward at No. 2.  Matt Dunn and Luke Moorhead were ahead 5-3 at No. 3 doubles, but the match was abandoned due to Wisconsin securing the doubles point.

The Badgers parlayed their doubles success into a slew of early singles wins, officially clinching the match when O'Hoisin defeated Reekie, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot.  Before the O'Hoisin-Reekie match, Robert Krill topped Luke Moorhead at No. 6 and Daniel Soyfer took down Alex Woodward at No. 5.

Wisconsin's Chase Colton withstood a second set battle with Matt Dunn for a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4.  In the last match to finish, Carranza needed split sets to defeat Grigorescu, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3), 1-0 (8).

"I am happy with the way the team competed today," said head coach Tyson Thomas.  "Wisconsin was an NCAA Tournament team last season and are very tough to play in Madison.  We had some chances that we missed and need to improve on them in the future."

The Mavericks return to action on Friday, Jan. 26, visiting Northern Illinois at 4 p.m.  Omaha will play St. Louis in DeKalb, Ill. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m.
