OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha women's tennis opened the 2018 season with a 6-1 victory over Milwaukee at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Mavericks are 1-0 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 0-1.

Omaha opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. The pair of senior Michelle Lo and junior Janelle Wilson blanked the team of Anna Daniel Fuentes and Agata Jurczak at No. 1, 6-0. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Savanna Crowell and freshman Natalie Lorentz defeated Milwaukee's Labina Petrovska and Nicole Clarke 6-2. Lastly, the tandem of sophomore Emily Behling and freshman Marie Kapelevich outlasted Loren Nelson and Joie Betz Freirich at No. 3, 6-4.

The Mavericks continued their solid play by taking five of six singles matches to claim the victory.  Lorentz stopped Clarke at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-1. Wilson topped Fuentes at No. 2, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Rylee Tucker clinched the match at No. 6 by outdueling Lucy Harper, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Lo needed split sets before toppling Petrovska, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

"This is a great way to start the season," said head coach Adam Summitt. "We played some strong doubles and got off to quick starts. Winning the doubles point is always big as that helped carry momentum for us into singles. I loved the way we fought and the way we overcame some deficits. I am proud of this group and looking forward to our next match."

Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 21, visiting UMKC at 9:30 a.m. and William Jewell at 3 p.m.
