OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's soccer player Xavier Gomez capped a stellar collegiate career with his selection in the MLS SuperDraft by the Minnesota United Football Club with the 18th pick of the second round (41st overall).  The first two rounds were held Friday, Jan. 19 in Philadelphia.

"I want to thank my coaches and teammates at Omaha," Gomez said.  "I've been blessed to be a part of this program for four years, and playing in front of the fans at Caniglia Field was a great experience.  I can't wait to get started and am beyond blessed to be given the opportunity to play for Minnesota United."

A three-year starter, Gomez was a crucial part of Omaha's run to the 2017 Summit League Postseason Tournament title and the program's first berth in the NCAA Tournament.  He was named First Team All-Summit League after providing a team-high eight assists and adding five goals.  He ended the year ranked 25th in the country and led the Summit League in assists.  The senior ranked in the top 10 in the league in points (18), goals (5) shots (36) and assists (8).

The Chicago native played in 68 career matches with 43 starts in his collegiate career.  Gomez ended his career with 27 points on eight goals and 11 assists.

"We are excited for Xavier to achieve his dream of becoming a professional soccer player," said head coach Jason Mims.  "Minnesota United is getting a two-way midfielder who is very competitive and savvy.  I am glad he is playing for Coach Adrian Heath as he is not afraid to play younger players and he appreciates hard-working players on both sides of the ball like Xavier."

Gomez's selection marks the second time a UNO player has been drafted.  The Seattle Sounders drafted Emir Alihodzic in the third round of the 2016 draft.
