IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Omaha men's tennis team lost a 6-1 decision to Iowa Friday afternoon inside the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. With the loss, the Mavericks are now 2-3 overall (0-0 Summit League) while the Hawkeyes are now 4-1 (0-0 BIG Ten).
Freshman Razvan Grigorescu claimed the only point of the afternoon for the Mavericks at the No. 1 singles position. Grigorescu defeated Josh Silverstein in split sets 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 1-0 (11-9) to remain undefeated on the year.
Iowa claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Matt Dunn and freshman Nathan Reekie fell 6-1 at No. 2 to Kareem Allaf and Jonas Larsen. Senior John Ellis and freshman Louis-Jonas Heizlsperger dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 3 to Robin Haden and Nils Hallestrand.
In singles action, sophomore Alex Woodward lost in split sets to Jason Kerst at No. 6 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Reekie pushed Haden in the second set but fell in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Omaha dropped straight set matches at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5.
The Mavericks return to the court against Creighton on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m.
