Frimpong Scores Twice as Omaha Advances to Summit League Title Game

OMAHA, Neb. – Fred Frimpong scored two goals, and Joseph Ghitis made three saves to help the third-seeded Omaha men's soccer team upset second-seeded Western Illinois 2-0, in the Summit League Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals on Thursday evening at Caniglia Field.  Omaha advances to face top-seeded Denver in the tournament championship match on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.

The Mavericks improved to 10-5-2 on the season.  The Fighting Leathernecks end their season with a 5-10-1 overall record.  

Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute after Emmanuel Hamzat beat a pair of defenders down the right side and placed a pass directly in front of Frimpong who touched the ball into the back of the net from the top of the six-yard box.

UNO increased its lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute after Frimpong corralled a pass from Diego Gutierrez and sprinted down the right side.  After beating a defender at the top of the box, Frimpong slipped a shot between the legs of the Western Illinois goalkeeper for the score.

•    The goals by Frimpong were the first of his collegiate career.
•    Omaha outshot Western Illinois 16-10 and held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
•    Gutierrez had a game-high four shots (one on frame) and had an assist.
•    Ghitis played the full 90 minutes and collected three saves in the shutout victory.
•    The Mavericks held a 7-6 lead in corner kicks.

•    The Mavericks improved to 8-1-1 at Caniglia Field this season.
•    Omaha and Denver will meet in the Summit League Men's Soccer Championship match for the second-straight season.  The Pioneers topped the Mavericks 2-1 last season in Denver.
•    Ghitis earned his 26th career win and 16th shutout.
•    Hamzat moved into fifth all-time in career points with 30.
