OMAHA, Neb. – Fred Frimpong scored two goals, and
Joseph Ghitis made three saves to help the third-seeded Omaha men's soccer team upset second-seeded Western Illinois 2-0, in the Summit League Men's Soccer Championship Semifinals on Thursday evening at Caniglia Field. Omaha advances to face top-seeded Denver in the tournament championship match on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.
The Mavericks improved to 10-5-2 on the season. The Fighting Leathernecks end their season with a 5-10-1 overall record.
Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute after
Emmanuel Hamzat beat a pair of defenders down the right side and placed a pass directly in front of Frimpong who touched the ball into the back of the net from the top of the six-yard box.
UNO increased its lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute after Frimpong corralled a pass from
Diego Gutierrez and sprinted down the right side. After beating a defender at the top of the box, Frimpong slipped a shot between the legs of the Western Illinois goalkeeper for the score.
