No. 24 Omaha Tussles with FGCU in a Midweek Contest

OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 24 Omaha men's soccer team begins a two-match road stretch spanning 18 days.  The Mavericks visit Florida Gulf Coast this Tuesday, Oct. 3.  Kickoff in Fort Myers, Fla., is set for 6 p.m. (CT).

Scouting Report: Omaha
The Mavericks are 7-2-2 overall, and 0-0-2 in Summit League play.  UNO went 0-1-1 last week in a pair of home matches.  Omaha dropped a 1-0 decision to crosstown foe, Creighton, last Tuesday.  Diego Gutierrez had a program-high two shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis made one save and allowed one goal.

On Saturday, UNO played to a 1-1 draw against conference rival Fort Wayne.  Xavier Gomez converted a penalty kick in the 47th minute to tie the game at 1-1.  UNO outshot Fort Wayne 17-4 on the evening.  Gomez had a team-best five shots.  The Mavericks also won the corner kick battle 6-3.  The two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards.

Maverick Bites
•    Omaha played Creighton in front of a program-high 4,986 fans at Caniglia Field Last Tuesday.
•    Through 11 games, five different Mavericks have scored a goal.  Overall, 11 different players have registered a point.  Ibisevic leads the team in scoring with six goals and an assist for 13 points.  Hamzat is second in scoring with five goals and an assist for 11 points.  Xavier Gomez is third with three goals and leads the team with four assists.  Eight UNO players have registered at least two points.
•    Omaha posted three straight 1-0 shutouts earlier this season, and have four clean sheets in 2017.

Scouting Report: Florida Gulf Coast
After opening the season 1-3-0, FGCU is unbeaten in its last four matches. The Eagles are 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the Atlantic Sun.  FGCU defeated conference rival North Florida last Saturday, 2-0.

Shak Adams, Robert Ferrer and Preston Kilwien each have three goals on the season to lead FGCU.  Adams, Ferrer and Dennis Zapata each have a team-high seven points.

Defensively, the Eagles had not allowed a goal in their last three games.  Connor Gavigan has started eight games in the net and is 4-2-1 on the season with a 0.97 goals-against average, and a 0.759 save percentage.  Jared Brown has made one start and is 0-1 on the season.

Tuesday is the first meeting all-time between the two programs.

Looking Back
No. 24 Omaha fought Fort Wayne to a 1-1 draw in double overtime last Saturday at Caniglia Field.

Fort Wayne's first real quality look came in the 17th minute, and the Mastodons took advantage.  Zach Tom controlled the ball just outside the 18 and fed Romain Lopez near the top of the box, who slotted his shot into the bottom corner and out of the reach of Joseph Ghitis.

Omaha tied the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute after Fort Wayne was called for a foul in its penalty box.  Xavier Gomez stepped up and fired the penalty kick into the right side of the goal for his third tally of the season.

Denzel Woods looked to put the Mavericks in front in the 55th minute, but his shot went off the crossbar. Elvir Ibisevic saw his head kept out of goal in the 80th minute.

Omaha outshot Fort Wayne 17-4 and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.  The Mavericks also won the corner kick battle 6-3.  The two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards.
