OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team defeated North Dakota, 6-1, on Sunday at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. The match win pushed the Mavericks to 2-2 overall (0-0 Summit League) while the Fighting Harks are now 0-4 (0-0 Big Sky).
"I was very happy with the energy we had today," said head coach Tyson Thomas. "North Dakota is a solid team and put us in some tough spots today, but we were able to handle the pressure this afternoon."
Doubles action saw sophomore Matt Dunn and freshman Nathan Reekie grab a 6-0 victory on court two. Freshman Louis-Jonas Heizlsperger and sophomore Alex Woodward clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Alex Mailes and Matt Mokanson on court three.
Omaha would grab five more team points on the singles courts. Woodward was off the court first with a 6-0, 7-6 (6) victory on court six. Senior Colin Buckley was next with a straight set 6-1, 7-5 win on court two over Ty Misialek. Maverick senior John Ellis would clinch the match for UNO on court five 6-2, 7-5 over Eshan Varma. Heizlsperger picked up a split set 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory over Simon Danyluk on court four.
"All in all, I am very proud of the way the team responded today," said Thomas. "We are a young team and to see this resilience is very promising."
Omaha returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 against Iowa. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
