OMAHA, Neb. – Elvir Ibisevic delivered a goal and an assist to lead the Omaha men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over San Francisco in Omaha.
The Mavericks open the season with a 1-0 record, while the Dons fall to 0-1 overall.
Mark Moulton opened the scoring at the 6:38 mark. Lalo Gamboa sent a nifty pass between a pair of San Francisco defenders. The pass found the feet of Moulton who took a touch before slipping his shot under Don's goalkeeper Ryan Buckingham.
San Francisco's Bryce Kaminski tied the game at the 10:22 mark, knocking the ball home after a shot by Santiago Digiuseppe was blocked.
The score remained tied until early in the second half. Maverick goaltender Joseph Ghitis played a ball to Ibisevic just past midfield. Ibisevic weaved through a pair of defenders and fired a shot past Buckingham to put Omaha on top, 2-1.
Ibisevic played facilitator on the Mavericks' third goal of the evening. After taking a Jake McCain throw in, Ibisevic found Cole Nelson at the top of the penalty area. Nelson gathered the pass and hammered a shot past the diving keeper for his first collegiate goal.
Ghitis earned the victory in net, making one save while allowing just one goal. Buckingham had five saves for the Dons.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 28, when it travels to Connecticut for a 6 p.m. game.
