OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team opened play in the Summit League Tennis Championships with a 4-0 loss to No. 48 Denver Friday evening at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
Denver took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Senior Erik Anderson and freshman Alex Woodward fell at No. 2, 6-3. Junior John Ellis and freshman Matt Dunn lost a tough match at No. 3, 6-3.
The Pioneers won three singles matches to clinch the victory. Woodward lost a straight set match at No. 3 to Yannik James, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5, Anderson fell to Alex Gasson, 6-2, 6-0. At No. 1 singles, Colin Buckley played a solid match against Henry Craig, but fell, 6-1, 6-3.
Three other singles matches went unfinished. Dunn dropped the first set at No. 2 singles, but held a 4-3 lead against Summit League Player of the Year Diogo Rocha. Mark Minic trailed David Fox at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 3-2. At the sixth spot, John Ellis won the first set against Wyatt Lovera 6-3, but trailed in the second set, 4-1.
The Mavericks finish the season with an 11-15 mark, while the Pioneers improved to 16-7 overall.
