OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team looks to continue its historic season Friday evening. The Mavericks will partake in the Summit League tournament for the first time in program history when they take on top seeded Denver. The match will take place at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb. at 6 p.m.
The Mavs clinched their spot in the league tournament by defeating South Dakota State last weekend, 4-3. Omaha improved to 11-14 overall and 2-3 in Summit League play this season. UNO's win total set a program record for wins in a single season.
Senior Erik Anderson saved his best performance for last earning Omaha's first ever Summit League Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for his performance against SDSU. In Anderson's final home match, he teamed with Alex Woodward at No. 2 doubles for 6-3 win that clinched the doubles point. In singles, he won a split set match, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1 over Lucas Pereira at No. 5 to tie the dual at 3-3.
In singles, Woodward, Marko Minic, and Matt Dunn each tied the single season school record for wins in a season with eight wins. Woodward is 8-14 while posting victories at the No. 1, 2, 3, and 4 positions. Minic is 8-15 with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles. Dunn is 8-13 with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Dunn and junior John Ellis finished the season with a 7-3 overall record and were 3-1 in Summit League play. The tandem of Anderson and Woodward went 7-10 this season playing at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions.
No. 48 Denver enters the match with a 16-7 overall record and a 5-0 league mark. The Pioneers defeated New Mexico, 5-2, on April 24 to conclude its regular season.
In singles, Henry Craig, Alex Gasson, and Diogo Rocha each lead Denver with 15 singles victories. Denver's top doubles pairing is Craig and Gasson, who have posted an 8-6 record at No. 1 doubles.
The winner of the Omaha/Denver match will advance to the Summit League Championship match against the winner of the matchup between IUPUI and Oral Roberts. The championship match will be held at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center in Omaha at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
