OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team won two matches against in-state foes on Sunday. The Mavericks shut out Hastings 7-0 to start the afternoon and finished the day with a 5-2 win over Midland. Omaha improved to 5-8 overall this season with a 0-1 mark in Summit League play.
Omaha 7, Hastings 0
Omaha captured two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over Hastings. At No. 1, Ignace Warson and Alex Woodward took down the team of Mark Gueswell and Razvan Dobrin, 6-2. Marko Minic and Matt Dunn clinched the doubles point with a victory at No. 2 over the tandem of Dakota Burns and Matt Case, 6-1.
"We made some changes in our lineup tonight," said head coach Tyson Thomas. "I was impressed with the effort our younger players put forth."
Omaha swept Hastings in singles play to end its seven match losing streak. At No. 1 singles, Dunn topped Gueswell 6-2, 6-2 for his third win of the season. On court two, Woodward earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dobrin 6-1, 6-0. Ignace Warson made quick work of Tanner Sandvick at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1. Sean Padios earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ben Petry at No. 5. Lukas Vanzura completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Omaha 5, Midland 2
The Mavericks earned the doubles point with a sweep of Midland. Alex Woodward and Sean Padios teamed for the first time this season at No. 1 doubles. The freshman duo defeated the team of Ryan Vitera and Andy McDill, 6-4. Matt Dunn and Brent McKnight picked up their fourth doubles victory of the season with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. Lukas Vanzura and Biraj Parajuli made their debut at No. 3 doubles and picked up a 6-1 victory over Dylan Hatanelas and Christian Slupe.
"Our doubles teams all performed at a high level this evening against a very good Midland team," said Thomas.
Omaha won four singles matches to clinch victory on the evening. Woodward claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over McDill at No. 1. Padios moved up to the No. 2 singles spot and earned a 6-3, 6-2 win. He is now 4-0 on the season. Vanzura secured a hard fought victory at No. 3 singles by a score of, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. At No. 5 singles Parajuli picked up his first singles victory of the season by winning, 6-0, 6-1.
Omaha returns to action on Saturday Mar. 12 with a matchup against Illinois-Chicago. The match will be at the Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
