NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Omaha men's tennis team outlasted the University of Mobile 5-4 in its first outdoor match of the season. The Mavericks improved to 6-10 on the season, while the Rams dropped to 7-4.
"We got off to a slow start in doubles, since this was our first match of the year outside," said head coach Tyson Thomas. "In singles, we turned it around quickly with straight set wins at number one and number two."
Omaha found itself in a 2-1 hole after the first three doubles matches. Mobile picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but the duo of Erik Anderson and Alex Woodward defeated Jonah Jakubec and Javier Ahumada at No. 2 to give Omaha a point.
The Mavericks won four of the six singles matches including two in split sets. Colin Buckley pulled Omaha even with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1. Matt Dunn made quick work of Cesar Paleari at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2.
The Rams regained the lead with straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Marko Minic evened the match with a split set win at No. 4 over Javier Ahumada. Woodward won the match for the Mavericks with a split set win at No. 3. He won the first set in a tie breaker 7-6 (4), but dropped the second set in a tie breaker 7-6 (7). Woodward clinched the match in a third set super tiebreaker 16-14.
Thomas praised the play of Woodward at No. 3 singles. "The match of the day was Woodward's. He lost the first set and won the second set in highly contested tiebreakers, which forced a third set super tie breaker. Alex prevailed in the super tiebreaker 16-14."
Omaha will play two matches on Tuesday starting with Loyola-New Orleans at 10 a.m. followed by Nicholls State at 3 p.m.
