OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha men's tennis team returned to action on Sunday evening against cross town rival Creighton. The Mavericks had several close matches, but lost 7-0. Omaha is 3-7 overall, while the Bluejays are 2-4.
Creighton got off to an early start by winning the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Quinn Dippel and Alex Koca defeated Colin Buckley and Ignace Warson, 6-1. The Bluejays clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Omaha's No. 3 tandem of Matt Dunn and Marko Minic won their match, 6-3.
Omaha was unable to stop Creighton in singles, despite two matches going to a third set tie breaker. At No. 1, Buckley overcame a slow start in the first set to push Quinn Dippel before losing 6-0, 6-4. Warson lost a split set decision at No. 6 to Jake Glazer 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (6). Alex Woodward played a tight match at No. 3 singles, but lost 7-5, 6-2. The most exciting match of the evening came at No. 2 singles. Dunn dropped the first set and rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker against Koca. Koca won the third set tie breaker to clinch the victory 6-2, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (8).
The Mavericks return to action next weekend with three home matches. Omaha hosts Nebraska on Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. On Sunday, UNO will play two matches. The Mavs host Hastings at 4 p.m., before welcoming Midland at 7 p.m. All matches will be played at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
