OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha opened Summit League play on Saturday night with a 3-1 win over IUPUI at Caniglia Field. Fazlo Alihodzic had a goal and two assists to lead the Mavericks.
The win moved Omaha to 4-3-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Jaguars dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Omaha was the first to strike as Seth Rinderknecht scored an 11th-minute goal off a corner kick from Alihodzic. Shortly after Rinderknecht's goal, there was a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Alihodzic took the kick and slotted it away to extend the lead to two.
IUPUI was able to get on the board less than a minute after Omaha's second goal. Joshua Ayala snuck a shot inside the left post to make the score 2-1. Cristian Soto was credited with the assist.
The Mavericks increased the lead to 3-1 with a 52nd-minute insurance goal from Jacob Weiler after a free kick from Alihodzic.
Omaha outshot IUPUI 15-9 and had a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Alihodzic had three shots on goal, while Elvir Ibisevic and Xavier Gomez each had two shots on target. Joseph Ghitis and Ugo Tritz split time in goal. Tritz made one save while earning his first collegiate victory.
