OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team lost 7-0 on Sunday afternoon against No. 52 Denver at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the Summit League while the Pioneers improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
"Denver has a very good team this year," commented head coach Tyson Thomas. "Our guys played better than reflected by the results. We gave ourselves opportunities but against good teams you don't get second chances. We will take today as a learning experience and use it to get better."
The Mavericks lost the doubles point to enter singles play down 1-0. Matt Dunn paired with Brent McKnight at No. 3 doubles but lost to David Fox and Jesse Ruder-Hook 6-0. At. No. 2 doubles, Erik Anderson alongside teammate Alex Woodward played well but lost to Yannik James and Diogo Rocha 6-2.
Denver would take all six singles matches from Omaha. Buckley would fall to No. 45 Rocha in a tight match at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2. Marko Minic played a tough match at No. 4 singles but lost to James 6-1, 6-1. At. No. 6 singles, John Ellis played a strong first set before succumbing to Wyatt Lovera 6-3, 6-0. The remainder of the Mavericks fell to the Pioneers in straight sets.
"The team is coming along and we are starting to play Maverick tennis the right way," Thomas said. "We need to regroup and play the same way against a good UMKC team next weekend."
UNO wraps up a five match homestand next weekend as it hosts UMKC at Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 6. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
