OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season Saturday evening falling to Illinois State, 6-1. The Mavericks move to 3-2 on season, while the Redbirds remain a perfect 4-0.
"I am proud of the way the guys represented Omaha tonight," said head coach Tyson Thomas. "We are taking plenty of good from this match and moving on."
Omaha dropped the doubles point despite playing two highly contested matches. Erik Anderson and Alex Woodward dropped a close match at No. 2 to Jakub Eisner and Egehan Sertkaya, 7-5. Matt Dunn and Brent McKnight fell at No. 3 doubles, 6-1. Omaha picked up a win at No. 1 doubles as Colin Buckley and Ignace Warson defeated Andreas Boers and Rodrigo Oliveira, 7-6 (10-2).
"Our number one and number double doubles teams played well tonight," said Thomas. "I was happy to see us pick up the win at number one."
On the singles side Buckley prevented the shutout with a win over Eisner 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. On court two Dunn won the first set but dropped the second set to Urh Krajnc Domiter. The third set tie breaker was close, but Domiter won the match 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12-10). Woodward played a close match on court three against Oliveira, but lost 6-4, 6-2. John Ellis played another close match on court six, but lost 6-4, 6-2. Anderson and Marko Minic dropped their matches on courts four and five to close out the match.
Coach Thomas praised the singles play from Buckley and Dunn. "I am very proud of the win Colin (Buckley) played in his singles match. It was one of the most complete matches I've ever seen him play. Matt (Dunn) played very well, but he wasn't able to quite get the win."
Omaha wraps up its busy weekend on Sunday against No. 51 Denver to open Summit League play. First serve is set for noon at Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
