OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team kicked off a three-match weekend by sweeping the Concordia Bulldogs 7-0 at home Friday night, only losing one set the entire match. UNO improved to 3-1 on the season, while CU dropped to 1-1.
"The guys came out and played well in doubles and that helped set the tone for singles," Omaha head coach Tyson Thomas said.
The Mavericks got on the board quickly by winning the doubles point. Matt Dunn and Brent McKnight easily won their match at No. 3 doubles, 6-0. Erik Anderson and Alex Woodward teamed up for another 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Colin Buckley and Ignace Warson completed the sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.
Omaha did not allow Concordia to get anything going on the singles side either. John Ellis swept Patricio Esquivel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Warson and Sean Padios each won identical matches 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Marko Minic clinched the match for Omaha with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Woodward defeated Thomas Greef in the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-3 to give the Mavericks a 6-0 lead. In the best match of the evening Dunn needed three sets to defeat Willy Pardos at No. 1 singles 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
"Concordia's top two guys competed very well in singles," said Thomas. "I was happy to see Alex and Matt come through in some tough situations. It is always beneficial to get some close match experience for these freshmen to help with their development."
The Mavericks do not have much recovery time as Illinois State visits Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
