LINCOLN, Neb. – The Omaha men's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season to in-stare foe Nebraska on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action, 6-1.
The Mavericks are now 1-1 on the season, while the Cornhuskers are 1-0.
"I'm proud with how well we fought today," said head tennis coach Tyson Thomas. "In numerous matches, we played better as the match went on. We have the talent to hang in with this level of opponent, but we need to keep learning and growing from these experiences."
Nebraska quickly got out to an early lead by taking the doubles point. Erik Anderson and Alex Woodward dropped their match at No. 3 doubles to Bradford Zitsch and Andrew Dzulynsky, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Scott Elsass and Marc Hermann topped the Mavericks Matt Dunn and Brent McKnight, 6-2. Colin Buckley and Ignace Warson played a close match against Dusty Boyer and Toby Boyer at No. 1, but eventually fell, 7-5.
Omaha did not give up as both teams moved into singles matches. Senior Erik Anderson earned a split set win at No. 5 over Zitsch, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Dunn and Woodward dropped their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles by the identical scores to Marc Herrmann and Toby Boyer, 6-1, 6-1. Tomislav Antoljak won his match over UNO's John Ellis at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
Buckley played a close match against Dusty Boyer at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-3. Marko Minic played a solid match at No. 4 against Dzulynsky before losing, 6-0, 6-4.
Tyson commented on the split set win by senior Erik Anderson. "I am very happy for Erik to close out the dual with a win. It shows the hard work he has put in during the offseason"
It is a quick turnaround for UNO as they host Doane College on Sunday at Miracle Hill Tennis Center. Doubles action is set to start at 4 p.m.
