VALPARAISO, Ind. – The No. 23 Omaha men's soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 1-0 overtime loss at Valparaiso Monday evening at Brown Field.
The Mavericks dropped to 6-2-1 on the season, while the Crusaders won their third straight to improve to 5-2-2 overall.
UNO allowed the game's lone goal with less than 90 seconds left in the first overtime, as the Crusaders' Andrew Avram gathered a loose ball in the box and snuck his shot inside the left post from 10 yards out.a
In total, the Mavericks were outshot by the Crusaders 14-4 and trailed 7-2 in shots on goal. Valparaiso kept the advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
Fazlo Alihodzic,
Michael Jaime,
Logan Mendez, and
Mark Moulton each had shots for Omaha. Alihodzic and Moulton each had shots on goal.
UNO got off to a quick start when Moulton forced Crusader goalkeeper Nico Campbell to make a save in the 3rd minute. Omaha's other scoring chance of the half came in the 32nd minute when Alihodzic forced Campbell to make another save.
Jaime and Mendez each had shots for the Mavericks in the second half, but neither was on target. Valparaiso took six shots in the second half, but only three were on target.
The Crusader defense continued to give the Mavericks fits in overtime by not allowing a shot. Valparaiso took three shots in extra time, including the game winner by Avram.
Josh Christensen played the first half in goal for Omaha making two saves.
Joseph Ghitis played the second half and all of the overtime making four saves.
