No. 23 Men's Soccer Opens Summit League Play At IUPUI

OMAHA, Neb. – Fresh off a thrilling double-overtime victory over Bradley and receiving its first ever NSCAA NCAA National Ranking, the Omaha men's soccer team opens Summit League play on Saturday, Sept. 26 against IUPUI at 6 p.m.

Omaha by the Numbers      

3505 – Attendance so far this season through five home games, tops in the Summit League.

599 - Minutes played by junior Lalo Gamboa, tops on the team this season.

17 – Assists for Omaha this season, tops in the Summit League and seventh nationally.

About Omaha

The Mavericks continue to stay hot at the midway point of the 2015 season with a 6-1-0 mark.  This season, UNO owns a 5-0-0 mark at Caniglia Field and has an 11 match home winning streak dating back to last season.  The streak is second to Denver's 20 straight home games.

Omaha entered the NSCAA NCAA Men's Top 25 this week for the first time in program history at No. 23.  The Mavericks had received votes in the previous two polls.  UNO has also made an appearance in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll and have received consideration from the CollegeSoccerNews.com poll.

UNO's offense is the story through the first part of the season as they lead the Summit League in almost every offensive category.  The Mavericks lead in assists (17), goals (15), points (47), and shots (120) and are in the top 15 in assists, goals, and nationally.

Defensively, Omaha has allowed eight goals this season and has a 1.11 goals-against average.  They also have a .758 save percentage and one shutout.

Mark Moulton leads the Summit League with four goals and 10 points.  Moulton also leads the league in shots (23).  Noor Hamadi and Logan Mendez are tied for second in the league with three goals apiece.  Mendez and Andres Irvin are tied for second in assists (3), while five other Mavericks have two assists each.  Joseph Ghitis leads the Summit League in save percentage (.786), goals against (3), and is second in goals-against average (0.75).  Christensen is fourth in save percentage (.722) and fourth in goals-against average (1.55).

The Mavericks look to defend their share of the regular season Summit League title won last year.  This season, UNO is eligible for Summit League and NCAA postseason competitions after completing the transition to NCAA Division I.

Judging the Jaguars

  • IUPUI has started the season 0-5-2, but all five losses have come by one goal.
  • Last week, the Jaguars went 0-2-1on the road, including a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati, a 1-1 draw with Belmont and a 1-0 loss to Lipscomb.
  • Goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes has a Summit League high 38 saves through seven games.  Last season, Cortes earned second team all-league honors.
  • Uriel Macias was a first-team all-league selection last season and the Summit League Newcomer of the Year.  Emmanuel Usen earned second team honors.
  • Clint Hoffar leads the team with four points on two goals, while Usen is second with three points on a goal and an assist.
  • Head Coach Isang Joseph is in his fifth season leading the IUPUI men's soccer program.

Series History against IUPUI

Omaha leads the all-time series with IUPUI, 2-1.  The home team has won each of the match-ups.  Last season, UNO defeated IUPUI at home, 2-1.

Excelling in the Classroom

The Omaha men's soccer team was recognized for its hard work in the classroom as the squad earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award.

Omaha was one of 305 collegiate men's soccer programs to surpass a 3.0 grade point average during 2014-15, ending the academic year at 3.16 as a team.  This is the 4th straight time the Mavericks have been recognized by the NSCAA for their academic performance under Head Coach Jason Mims.

Two other Summit League programs received the honor, Denver and IUPUI.

Omaha was recognized as one of 208 schools to have both their men's and women's programs recognized.  This is the fourth consecutive year both Omaha soccer teams have been recognized for their work in the classroom.

Leading the Summit

  • Mark Moulton leads the Summit League with four goals and nine points.  Moulton also leads the league in shots (23).
  • Logan Mendez has nine points on three goals and three assists, which is second in the Summit League.  Mendez is tied for second in goals and fourth in assists.
  • Noor Hamadi also has three goals and is tied with Mendez for second in the league.
  • Andres Irvin is tied for fourth in assists (3) and is tied for fifth in points (7).
  • Goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis leads the league in save percentage (.786) and is second in goals against average (0.75).
  • As a team, the Mavericks lead the Summit League with assists (17), goals (15), points (47), shots (120), and corner kicks (48).

Entering the National Scene

  • Logan Mendez and Mark Moulton are tied for 18th nationally with two game-winning goals.
  • Mendez and Andres Irvin are tied for 42nd with three assists.
  • Moulton is tied for 35th with four goals scored and 39th with 10 points.
  • As a team the Mavericks are ranked 16th in scoring offense averaging 2.14 goals per game.
  • Omaha averages 17.14 shots per game, which is seventh nationally.
  • Omaha is ranked seventh nationally with 17 assists, 12th nationally with 15 goals, and 14th with 47 points.

Omaha Enters NSCAA NCAA Poll at No. 23

The Omaha men's soccer team made its first appearance in the weekly NSCAA NCAA Division I Men's National Poll, coming in 23rd in this week's poll from NSCAA.com.

UNO received 76 points in the voting after spending the previous two weeks in the "receiving votes" category.  They also are receiving votes in this week's poll from CollegeSoccerNews.com.

UNO Still Second in NSCAA NCAA Western Region

Omaha remains in second in the fourth edition of the NSCAA NCAA West Region behind Summit League foe Denver.  The Pioneers are 6-0-1 overall and ranked 12th nationally.  The Mavericks are 6-1-0 on the year.

Rounding out the top five are Utah Valley (5-1-0), UNLV (4-2-0), and SIUE (3-2-1).
