MADISON, Wisc. – The Omaha men's tennis team travelled to Big 10 country on Sunday afternoon to take on the University of Wisconsin. The Badgers defeated the Mavericks, 7-0. Omaha is now 3-9 on the season, while Wisconsin improves to 3-10.
"We came really close in doubles again," commented head coach Tyson Thomas. "The guys are starting to believe and we just need to take that final step to get over the hump."
Omaha began the match by dropping the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Erik Anderson and Ignace Warson were defeated by the duo of Jakhongir Jalaov and Alexander Kokorev, 8-1. Despite playing a competitive back-and-forth match at No. 1, Nathan Greteman and Colin Buckley were unable to overcome the team of Josef Dodridge and Jose Carranza and lost by a score of 8-6. Marko Minic and John Ellis were not given a chance to conclude their match at No. 3 against Darius Mackenzie and John Zordani.
Wisconsin maintained its momentum from doubles to capture all six singles points up for grabs. Lukas Vanzura dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Michael Sinha at No. 6. Minic lost to Jalalov at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 5, Greteman fell to Zordani, 6-2, 6-0. Warson lost to Carranza at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2. Anderson lost a tough decision at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 1, Buckley fell to Dodridge, 6-1, 6-2.
"We are in the midst of a very difficult portion of our schedule," comment Thomas. "This is going to test the guys both mentally and physically, but I'm confident we'll come out of it stronger."
Omaha travels to Kansas City, Mo. on Wednesday, March 11 for a pair of matches. The Mavericks open with UMKC at 9 a.m., followed by a match-up against Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. Later in the week, Omaha visits No. 58 Nebraska in Lincoln on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m.
