FULLERTON, Calif. – Omaha soccer opened a two game road trip to California with a scoreless tie against Cal State Northridge this evening at Titian Field in Fullerton, Calif. The Mavericks are now 3-2-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in their last four games. Cal State Northridge, a preseason Top 25 team, is now 3-3-1 on the season.
“This is the best team we have played this year,” commented Omaha head coach Jason Mims. “They have talent all over the field.”
Omaha was outshot 14-7 and 5-0 on goal, but the Mavericks defense pulled the Matadors offside six times on the evening. Goalkeeper Josh Christensen made five saves, including one in the second overtime to preserve the draw.
Mims praised his team's toughness on the road. “I am so proud of our boys. They played a Top 20 team on the road and battled them for 110 minutes. Our mental toughness and resilience showed throughout the game. Now we have to prepare and bounce back to play a very good Cal State Fullerton team on Sunday.”
Emir Alihodzic had three of the Mavericks seven shots on Friday night. Teammate Mark Moulton added two shots.
Omaha returns to action on Sunday, September 21 against Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. (CT) at Titian Stadium. The Mavericks open conference play on Saturday, September 27 against Eastern Illinois at Caniglia Field at 7:00 p.m.
