OMAHA, Neb. – Santa Clara scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime to earn a 3-2 win over the Omaha men's soccer team on Friday night at Caniglia Field.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 0-1 on the season.

In the 108th minute of the game, Santa Clara's Edson Cardona fired the penalty kick past UNO goaltender Joseph Ghitis to cap a comeback from a 2-0 deficit.  The last two goals scored by the Broncos came while playing one man down due to a red card issued to Max Ornstil in the 74th minute.

The Mavericks scored two quick goals midway through the first half to take a 2-0 lead.  First, Mark Moulton's cross from the right wing found Vance Rookwood who headed the ball just under the crossbar.

Just 1:33 later, the Mavs got a break when a misplay by Santa Clara goaltender Kendall McIntosh led to a corner kick.  From the left side, Moulton's kick was headed into the lower right corner by Nick Miller.

The Broncos cut the lead in half in the 45th minute.  Matt Escobar's throw in from the right side bounced to Carlos Delgadillo who fired it home at 44:24.

The three goals came on the only three shots in the half.

The Mavericks will finish the weekend against Stanford on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
